I've been away for awhile. Yes, I know, I'm letting everyone down. OK, probably just Crystal - because she's the only one who has been reading my blogs.

I've been on a bit of a Dishy break, it was getting to the point where I wasn't really happy with Dishy, and I didn't know what her direction was. Right now everyone is having babies (sans dishy) so I've been doing baby things mostly. But I was commissioned to do some wedding cards for a friend of mine, and I have been doing more and more illustration lately.

This year I probably won't be doing markets until Christmas. But my new website will have shopping on it so you can get my stuff on etsy as well as at missdishy.com (don't mix that up with dishy.com) that's a porn site.

I have many photographs too, so I've been working in different mediums a bit.

I have tons of new cards and am trying to find a letterpress to get them printed. That is a big goal this year - to have my stuff letterpressed. If you know of a letterpress printer, let me know at michelle@missdishy.com

Alright. Looking forward to getting back into things. See you soon at a Starbucks near you - (I've recently discovered something to drink there, the Passion Iced Teas.)

Well.. It's my birthday and I'm not too keen. Normally, I'm SUPER pumped for birthdays, but not this year.... boo....

Anywhoodle. The Dishy buzz as of late? Just makin cards! Everything else I make is ridiculously time consuming. And all summer, things haven't been selling. So. I might as well go back to my roots (the WHOLE reason why I started to craft was because I love stationery and would one day love to be in the New York National Stationery Show.) So I've been illustrating and making real beautiful patterns and really fun colour palettes. I'm making card sets with stickers and other surprises instore so I'll definitely have to post them when they are done. (Well some of them are done, but I don't have pictures.)

I still feel like the only people who read my blog are the stinkers who spam me. So, if you aren't a spammer, thanks for stopping by.

I'll be back at the farmer's market at the end of august. Busy month this month.
Don't forget to head to the MAKE IT show in September to see the lovely 'Twee' and to the Stop and Shop at Christmas time, with yours truly. I'll be selling my plushies in ornament form (c'mon! you gotta love that.) so stop by and bring me those cookies.

Organized?

well. The Highlands Street Festival was a really fun show. We got to hang out with great vendors again (the Twee girls are always good for entertainment), and my new tent is SOOooooOOO fabulous. When it rained, miss dishy wasn't ruined like with the last tent.

I've decided to only sell my button magnets and my glass magnets from now on, mostly because the rare earth magnets (As strong as they are) still like to jump ship when you reverse it's poles. (Not all the time, but the odd one out of every batch. But the odd one is still too much for me.) So. I'm revamping the button magnets as we speak and I'll be alot happier in the end.

Soo. Dishy spent the rest of sunday (After sleeping in from Greg's really terrific birthday party) at Ikea finding ways to organize the studio. I ended up buying this really great set for organizing... but Miss Dishy does not look organized. It looks like a scrap yard at the moment. And it's so overwhelming, I don't even want to go in that room. So. I dunno when my house will look like an Ikea room, but it's definitely not organized.

So, I am always complaining about never finding cool fabrics. Yes we have stores around town. but No, I don't think many of the fabrics are very cool. I found these, which I made into magnets, which everyone told me to make into pendants, and I'm sure if I made them into pendants people would say, you should make those into car seat covers or something. I still have no wheres to do my silver smithing, but when I do, I'll probably make some pendants or something. Right now my studio space is cramped enough, and now that I bought my uber fancy large format printer (I did! a canon pixma9000) I can't fit anything anywhere. I don't even have a table for the markets now. I'll just balance my stuff on my knee and tell people not to touch it unless they buy it.

I've yet to figure out my printer, it prints vector at 72dpi which in the design world makes no sense at all. But the photographs are lovely. I'll be selling those soon enough. My dream is to sell my illustrations though.

I did add some cards to my "Dishy-nery" line this week at the Stop & Shop. Most people giggled, which always makes me happy. I had one lady look quite offended, but maybe she sleeps around lots. (The card was about sleeping around lots.)

Well today was officially my day off since the past two weeks (well, three really) have been Super hectic. Doing the Stop & Shop was a little hectic, but was so lovely to sit and chat with the Twee ladies all weekend. They're heading to New York and San Fran (I love San Fran) for the Renegade Craft Fair. If you are anywhere near, stop by! It should be an amazing event.

Today, I slept in, enjoyed a grilled cheese sandwich, and updated the miss dishy website. To be uploaded tomorrow. Since I've heard that people actually read my blog, I'd like to be a little more diligent on updating it. (I'd like to not be a slacker in this respect.) so. tomorrow I'll be uploading pics and updating thingers.

So, this weekend at the Stop & Shop, I realized that people do actually read my blog. Other than Crystal Driedger. haha. SOOOoooo. I need to get some work done and get this thing a rockin. So my plan is weekly blog updates. Since I've been working non-stop for the past two weeks, I'm a little exhausted, but this weekend I'll be working on my website and my blog, so check back next week sometime. You'll be impressed. I'm sure of it.

If not, well, set your expectations a little lower next time.

I'd just like to convey my excitement of the discovery that I've some how made it onto a spam list telling everyone that I have virus'. (Well, not me, but my blog.) It's funny because you search those lovely fellows commenting on my site, and they are all over the internet spreading their annoying ways.
I don't have a virus on my MAC. So. Have no fear. I'm not sending you vitual diseases.

So. not to look like I am totally being lazy, I'm not. I do actually work whilst I sit at home being unemployed. But I have to admit, I have been avoiding my blog because, I really want it to be lovely, and I think it looks stink. One day I will learn how to "design" my blog, then this Miss Dishy will be a happy camper. Anywhoodle.I thought I would just post some things that I am working on lately.

I was thinking about Self-promo pieces and leave behind pieces the other day, and came up with a rather charming idea (I think). I'm still a muddled when it comes to whether I should be advertising as Miss Dishy or as my real name. For the outside world, Miss Dishy is the name I am going by, like celebrities with fake names. It's like my stage name. But as for applying for jobs, I can't apply as Miss Dishy. Even though a select group of friends, including two of my favorite boys in the world, have started to call me Dishy or Miss Dishy. Which every time they say it I have to admit, I get the giggles and feel like I'm eight and a boy just punched me to tell me he likes me.

Anywhoodle, enough of that rant. So. For my leave behind, I created a postcard, that actually cuts out and becomes a small paper doll, a wee "Trial" version of Miss Dishy. I can be taken to board meetings, I don't take much room in any office, and I am very pleasant to work with, plus I am agreeable too, oh, and I never take extended breaks. I initially struggled with the leave behind idea. But, I'm really excited for this one, and hope that it's a success. We'll see what people say. I'm going over to show Agolfpro today. He'll tell me what he thinks. (On a side note, one of my best memories of working with Agolfpro was asking him everyday "Is this gross?". He always had a great reply, and we would have great critiques together. A very good match we are.)

So. The other stuff is my Miss Dishy packaging for this year. I've decided to add a few more colours to the Miss Dishy palette (Unfortunately the web versions are quite hideous). I really feel like this year, we need to be colourful. I love my new palette, it's more saturated then my previous palettes and I like that I am exploring and being more adventurous with my schemes. (Believe me, for 4 years of design school, all I did was Lime Green and Cyan. It's nice to break free.) I'm doing some really great pressies for friends right now, I'm making all my friends in plush form. I LOVE this idea, because it really shows how much I care about the person, and most people really seem to enjoy having a plush teensy version of themselves on their desks. So. This one is actually of me, and my mate in NZ, Andy. I'm sending him a version of myself so we can hang out together. Since I moved back to Canada, we really miss each other's company. So I'm hoping to put a smile on his face when he gets this package...

Alright. So. My next adventure is doing the "PAWS and CLAWS" gala, with Miss Driedger and some other really wonderful artists. Basically it is an event to help raise funds for the Edmonton Humane Society. I chose this hilarious beagle named "Watson". (I really wish I could adopt him.. ) and basically my art piece is going to be a children's book about him. I'm extremely excited about this project! Check out the website, and head over to the gala on April 12, 2008 if you can, it would really help out the Society. The proceeds will be going to the new 40,000 sqFt building they are currently constructing on the North West side of the city. Miss Dishy's 2008

So another year, Miss Dishy is going to be one years old this month. She started all the way in New Zealand, making arm cuffs at the start, then onto pirate plushies.
This year has new ideas, with Dishy-nery (Stationery for fantastic people) and hopefully a few children's books. She's hoping for more freelance work, and taking courses in Glass Fusing and more Silver smithing. 2008's a big year.

Anywhoodle. Here's what she's been doing as of late, some posters, some wedding invitations, some drinks with her favorites Vance and Adolfo.

Pay it Forward

Probably the nicest thing to happen to me this christmas season, happened this morning. I was in line at the drive thru Second Cup in St. Albert, and the car infront of me was taking awhile getting it's drinks. Ra ra ra, Mister Dishy and I patiently wait. They drove away, and as I proceeded to the window to receive the greatest invention of all time (a soy Vanilla Bean Hot Chocolate) the girl informed me that the car infront of me paid for my treat. What a wonderful gesture! It really made me smile, and made me smile all day. When I get extra money, I will definitely pay it forward, because it really made my day!

In my design career, I actually have been asked "Can you copy this?". I think as a young designer fresh out of school somebody must have thought that I would have naively said "Yes". But ruining my name and career wasn't really what I wanted out of my career, especially within the first five years. Ever since those days, I've worried about my work being stolen. Some people say it's a compliment, a 'homage' of sorts. But, I think it more insulting than anything.

Anywho, I just found a site that has been quite eye opening, and I thought I'd share it with the world.

For a woman that is unemployed, it amazes me how busy I actually am!! It's crazy.
This week I made some plushies for a loverly friend from Uni. We went for tea and chatted about her new friends I made her, and I hope that the people receiving them really like them! I'l post pics of them!

I have just a few plushies left, most of them I traded off at the Royal Bison to vendors, which means, they went to good homes, and I hope that sometimes I can visit my plushies, to make sure people are feeding them and such.

Mister Dishy is currently having surgery, so let's hope he has a speedy recovery before the christmas season starts to get really out of control!

Anywho. I'll add more pics soon, here's what I have left of my plushies, remember if you want to order before christmas, NOW's the time!!

Well. My studio has exploded. and I am scared to enter it. It's been four days since the stop and shop. I can't even look at it. So productivity has ceased! But. The best news is, I bought a winter jacket today with the winnings from the Stop and Shop. I'm no longer cold! The man at Lee Valley today pointed out (with a lovely Britishy accent) that I was definitely not dressed for Canada.

*(I guess this is my last ditch effort for New Zealand, as it's summer there now, and my mate Andy is walking round in Shorts and going for beers on the outdoor patios in Grey Lynn and Ponsonby. Sigh. I really miss NZ.)*

Anywhoodle. I have big plans. BIG. I am finalizing my website, as I went to an illustrator's meeting this week and felt horribly inadequate as my website was not up, and I didn't bring samples. I'm not a braggy lady, so I'm real shy about showing my artwork to a bunch of people who are actually out doing illustration as a real job. Where as I am merely faking it, so I was pretty embarrassed.

So. I've got some ideas for the Royal Bison, and some for my website, and if I can break free from my new boy (hearts), mister dishy, every now and then, I'll get it all done. (it's totally my fault, not his...)

Anywhoodle. So.. everything is coming together, this evening I am simply cleaning the disaster, then doing some paintings and some sketches. More pictures will be added to this site, and then missdishy.com will be born sometime this month hopefully.

STOP & SHOP!

The Stop and Shop was such a great time! I had such a great response, and was selling out of all my goods! I kept having to go home and making more! (Next time I'll be more prepared!) Anywhoodle, it was a great show, and loved every minute of it!

Coming up this week will be my updated blog with christmas ideas and etc... so stay tuned (As Steevee the TV Desk Plushie would say.)

I am taking orders for Christmas so get those requests in ASAP! So I have time to make them!

So unfortunately the St Albert show was a complete bust for Miss Dishy and Crystal Driedger. We barely covered the costs of our table and basically got dirty looks all weekend. Unfortunately, I got super sick and missed the uneventful sunday, but Mr Dishy and Crystal covered for me, and I'm greatly in their debts!

So. Let's hope that the Stop and Shop will be way more successful!
It's handmade indie crafts. With real funky things, that you can't buy from the dollar store that was made in china. SO, if you are looking for one of a kind sort of things, head to the Stop and Shop!

Spray Painted!

I have an affinity for spray painting things. The fumes are super toxic, and my index finger always hurts afterwards, but you can't help but love that you have no visible brush strokes in the end.

I just bought a beautiful (yet lovingly tacky) mirror from a Garage sale for $5 and painted it white. I know some people would have loved me to keep the gold, but this lady isn't just some people. So it's white. And on a white wall, it will be supreme.

I also got a new magnet board from IKEA the other day, which really isn't a magnet board, but it shall become my new magnet board since my old one is rather full.

Not that I have any money, since I STILL haven't found a job..., but I found this wholesale craft store that is going out of business and has opened it's doors to the public. Super cheap stuff!! So everyone must go!

Epoxy Toxy.

So, I'm making magnets and pins today, with Epoxy Resin coatings. To work with, it is messy, toxic, and makes me uneasy, but the result is so fan flippin tastic that I can't stay away. My previous experience was rather a blast, as, I used plastic containers to mix the epoxy in. Those proceeded to melt and smoke, and I was running round in a blind panic, thinking it was going to burst into chemical flames and me without my WHIMIS training. In the end, I just let it smoke on my driveway, which resulted in a giantic ball of epoxy in a metal tin. I have a good chuckle about this every once and awhile.
But today's adventures were far more boring, I used the proper containers, and did about 20 items. Hopefully they'll turn out.
My new stuff will be out and about on Saturday (at the downtown farmer's market), plus I have a catalogue coming out soon!

Can More? Or Canmore?

Just spent a lovely weekend away with a real great friend of mine, Raoul from Dirtylab. I love chatting to him about many things, including art and design, because I find him very business savvy and always has great advice from him. (He's a little more level headed.. I'm more crazy and laughy)

We talked about Miss D and where this lovely lass is headed. During our weekend of debotchery, we hashed out some great ideas about marketing Miss D and where she needs to go from here.

She's always wanted to do the Stationery route, with wedding Stationery in the fore front, social stationery close in tow. My plushies eventually, will become storybooks with a playful world about Sock Princes and guys named 'Chester'. Which will be my children's line. Then the Jewellery aspect of Miss D, which has always been a passion with me (have you ever seen my jewellery collection?). Hopefully signing up for a Glass making class this winter, and finding a place to do my silver smithing, I think things will really take off with this line.

Anywho, I'm real excited now, and can't wait to make all my new things this week.(Plus real fun new packaging for my Desk Buddies.. sigh)

Last week I returned to another passion, Ballet. And I'll tell you how successful it was when my calves heal and I am able to walk downstairs again.

Just trying to get everything up and running on Etsy, but I thought I'd give a little preview before I spend a million hours colour correcting all of my photos. So head over to my flickr site to check out the goods.

I'm having a lot of fun making my new Desk Plushies, and can't wait to make my christmas versions of everything. My christmas shows are still unconfirmed (I need to apply first...) but I have a few lined up for November, hopefully the wonderful Stop and Shop!

Hi Everyone, going to be at the Downtown City Farmer's Market Sept 8 and 22. (Although I won't physically be there myself, which is sad because I'm rather funny.)

Been working like a mad woman, trying to find a job (no luck, unless I move overseas) and making new products.

My new products include:
Desk Buddies - Wee little fellows that like to hang out on your desk. And eat your mid morning snacks.
Glass coasters - A step up from my we little wood ones, I'm trying glass this time!
Picture Frames - They hold 4x6 photos will style.
Vinyl and Micro Suede Bracelets - My personal favorites, that I've been sitting on for awhile. (Well since New Zealand)

So. Etsy will be up soon, did my photo shoot this week... and for christmas I have heaps of new items, including photo acrylic wall hangers, which I am SUPER pumped about.

Thanks so much for everyone's support this weekend at the Farmer's Market. I know the weather was terrible, so it was very lovely to see so many people.
